Just a Bit of Marketing Psychology

Quick quiz! Which of
the following is more likely to happen?
- Being attacked and killed by a shark
- Being killed by falling airplane parts
As it turns out, you are 30 times more likely to be killed by falling airplane parts than
you are to be killed by a shark! Most people will guess otherwise, which is
due to the overwhelming media attention dedicated to the occurrence of
shark attacks. This is an example of
what Dr. Daniel Kahneman calls the "availability heuristic," which he discusses in his book Thinking, Fast and Slow. We are more likely to remember something
simply because we see it or hear about it more often.
Did you know you can use this natural human decision making process for
marketing purposes? The more often your
logo appears, the more likely it is to be seen by potential customers. The more often potential customers see your
logo, the more likely they are to think of you when they need your product or
service!
One way to make sure you are taking advantage of the
availability heuristic is through the use of promotional products. Pens, mugs, t-shirts, stuffed animals, yo-yo's,
and so much more! Think of the number of
impressions you can make on your customers by using promotional products.
